Michael Jackson: King of Pop Was Also King of Compassion

The accomplishments of Michael Jackson in the field of music, dance and entertainment have been documented worldwide. He was an innovator who changed the face of modern dance, captivated and influenced generations of music lovers and produced ground-breaking videos that were ahead of their time. What is lesser known, however, is how much he gave of himself, his time and his finances in order to help the suffering and those in need.

Quietly and without the need or desire for recognition, Jackson visited orphanages and schools across the globe, paid the cost of funerals for those who could ill afford the expense, and supported so many charities and good causes that he was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most charities donated to by a pop star.

Indeed, the entire proceeds of his 1992/1993 Dangerous Tour went to charity, as well as his cut from the 1984 Victory Tour. Whilst the tabloid media busied themselves in tearing him down, Jackson was using his time to give to the needy, sick or deprived, visiting as many orphanages and hospitals as he did concerts.

From a very early age, Jackson was moved to tears by the suffering of others, and especially the plight of children. As a child watching images of starving African children, he told his mother he was going to 'do something about that one day'. And, he kept to his word.

On the second anniversary of his death, we look at just a few instances which give us a glimpse into the singer's heart for the suffering:

In 1985, Jackson co-wrote the song 'We Are The World' together with Lionel Richie in order to combat poverty in the Third World. The record sold over ten million copies worldwide and raised a staggering $63 million plus for humanitarian aid in Africa and the US.

On February 6th, 1988, the inspirational and spiritually uplifting single, 'Man in The Mirror' entered the pop charts. Jackson donated all of his royalties from the single to Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, a camp for children who have cancer.

In December 1988, Jackson paid a visit to 12 year old David Rothenburg, who was hospitalised after being doused with kerosene and seriously burned by his father five years previously. Despite an estimated fifty operations, Rothenburg remained disfigured. The star paid for all necessary further operations and the pair remained lifelong friends.

On 7 February, 1989, Jackson visited the Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton, California. Three weeks earlier, a gunman had open fired 100 bullets in the school playground, killing five children and wounding 39 others before turning the gun on himself. Jackson spent time comforting the children and helping them to think positively again.

On May 6th 1992, Jackson paid the funeral costs for young Ramon Sanchez. Sanchez was killed by a stray bullet during the Rodney King violent riots in California and the boy's parents could not afford to bury him.

On November 25th, 1992, Jackson granted the wish of young David Sonnet, who he met through the Make A Wish Foundation, an organisation that grants wishes to terminally ill children. Sonnet had suffered a brain aneurysm at the age of 8, leaving him unable to talk or walk. Jackson invited the boy and his mother to his Neverland home and later, his mother credited the singer's music for helping her son to recover from a coma.

In December 1993, Jackson and his newly formed 'Heal the World Foundation'supported the UK's 'Operation Christmas Child' in airlifting over 100,000 gifts, toys, sweets, pictures and school items to needy children in Sarajevo.

In February 1995, the star made a private request to attend the funeral of Craig Fleming, a two year old boy whose mother threw him over the side of a Los Angeles bridge along with his four year old brother before jumping to her death. The mother and four year old survived. Jackson contributed towards the surviving youngster's medical expenses and founded a special trust fund for his ongoing care.

On November 1, 1996, Jackson donated most of the proceeds from his HIStory concert in Bombay, India, to the poor. When travelling from the airport, he stopped the car several times to dance with, pick up and hug poor urchins from the streets. On the day of his show in India, he invited around 50 children from local orphanages to his hotel room where they were treated to games, cakes and burgers. Later this same month, the star visited an orphanage and a school for blind children in Thailand. At the orphanage, he distributed toys and gifts to the children before leaving a donation of $100,000. An orphanage spokeswoman at the time said, "They don't know him as a pop star. To them he is just a very nice man who came here to offer hope."

New stories of Jackson's compassion for those less fortunate are surfacing regularly, and his humanitarian legacy continues through the stipulation in his will that the Jackson Family Trust donate 20% of its earnings to a number of undisclosed charities.

Only now that he is gone are we truly realizing what a legacy Jackson left. Yes, his performances left people mesmerized, and his music captivated music lovers worldwide. But perhaps his most lasting legacy will be his humanitarian work which has left an indelible mark on the countless hearts of those whose lives he touched.

When Michael Jackson was a Jehovah's Witness

#40  Сообщение Белая роза » 13 июл 2011, 21:44

http://www.goddiscussion.com/69836/when ... s-witness/

Michael Jackson's mother Katherine Jackson was baptized as a Jehovah's Witness in 1963. Michael who, at that time was five years old, was raised as a Jehovah's Witness by his mother, and he regularly attended "Kingdom Hall" meetings and did door-to-door preaching as required of all Witnesses by the group.

In the book Michael Jackson: The Magic and Madness by J. Randy Taraborrelli, we are told that:

Katherine Jackson was a strong force in the lives of her children, passed on to them a deep and abiding respect for certain religious convictions. She had been a Baptist and then a Lutheran but turned from both faiths…She was baptized in 1963 in the swimming pool at Roosevelt High in Gary. From then on, she asked that the rest of the family get dressed in their best clothes every Sunday and walk with her to the Kingdom Hall, their place of worship.

According LaToya Jackson, Michael's sister in her book, LaToya: Growing up in the Jackson Family:

Michael and I were very active in the Jehovah's Witness faith. … Five days a week the two of us and Mother studied the Bible at home and attended the Kingdom Hall. … Every morning Michael and I witnessed, knocking on doors around Los Angeles, spreading the word of Jehovah. … As my brother's fame grew, he had to don convincing disguises, like a rubber fat suit he bought years later, …

Michael continued to be active in Jehovah's Witnesses door-to-door preaching even after he released his Thriller video which brought him unprecedented fame in the entertainment industry. He went out on door-to-door proselytizing twice a week for a few hours and he also regularly attended Kingdom Hall meetings with his mother Katherine. Jwfacts.com describes a typical day in Michael's door-to-door proselytizing for his Jehovah's Witnesses faith:

An example of a typical day of spreading The Word: wearing a disguise – a moustache, hat and glasses – and a tie and sweater, and holding a copy of Watchtower, Michael stood at the door of an apartment in suburban Thousand Oaks, California, one morning in early 1984. 'I'm here to talk to you about God's word,' he told the young girl who answered the bell. She slammed the door in his face. He went to the next apartment…

The girl certainly wouldn't have slammed the door on his face had she known that the preacher was Michael Jackson himself!!

The girl certainly wouldn't have slammed the door on his face had she known that the preacher was Michael Jackson himself!!

Michael's father Joseph was never a witness and he was said to have been an avid philanderer who lived an openly promiscuous life, and according to the book Michael Jackson: The Magic and Madness:

One of The Jackson Five's early performance numbers was their rendition of soul singer Joe Tex's raucous 'Skinny Legs and All'. As part of the act, Joseph encourage young Michael to go into the audience, crawl under tables, lift up women's skirts, and peek at their panties. ? After a show like this one, the boys would go home to their religious mother, who would then tuck them into bed and remind them of the virtues of being a good Jehovah's Witness. She truly never knew anything about the nightclub act until many years later.

Michael Jackson came in conflict with the Church leadership in 1984 after the release of his Thriller video which seemed to have occultic themes. Michael was reprimanded by the church elders for the video and on a May 22, 1984 edition of Awake! Michael was quoted as repentantly saying:

I would never do it again…I just intended to do a good, fun short film, not to purposely bring to the screen something to scare people or to do anything bad. I want to do what's right. I would never do anything like that again." Why not? "Because a lot of people were offended by it…That makes me feel bad. I don't want them to feel that way. I realize now that it wasn't a good idea. I'll never do a video like that again…In fact, I have blocked further distribution of the film over which I have control, including its release in some other countries. There's all kinds of promotional stuff being proposed on Thriller. But I tell them, 'No, no, no. I don't want to do anything on Thriller. No more Thriller.

Michael's determination to remain true to the faith his mother Katherine thought him is shown in the following statement in the book LaToya: Growing up in the Jackson Family:

On the Victory tour, … , [Michael] hired someone whose sole task was to locate a Kingdom Hall in each town so that Michael wouldn't miss a single meeting. … Michael … one elder issued him an ultimatum that my brother must choose between music and the [Jehovah's Witness] religion. … Because Michael diligently studied the Bible, he could usually cite chapter and verse supporting his contention that entertaining people was not wrong. 'I'm still living according to the [WatchTower Society's] teachings,' he pointed out,…. I still go door to door wherever I am, even if I'm on tour. I can't help it if people hang up my poster on their wall or tear my picture out of a magazine. I don't ask them to idolize me. I only want them to enjoy my music.'…

In-spite of what seemed repentance by Michael it became more and more difficult for him to reconcile his puritan Jehovah's Witnesses faith with his career as an entertainer. LaToya recounts in her biography that:

Once when an elder criticized, 'Your movements on stage suggest sex; don't do them anymore,' my brother complied without protest and promptly changed the routine. He also invited an elder on tour to see for himself that he lived in harmony with all the faith's rules, canvassed door to door, and attended all the meetings.

But by the spring of 1987 Michael was forced to come to terms with the fact that he could not continue to reconcile the circumstances of his life with the strict religious beliefs of the Jehovah's Witnesses and in a letter, he formally dissociated himself from the Jehovah's Witnesses organization. A press release by the Jehovah's Witnesses headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, declared that Michael Jackson was no longer a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Michael's final decision to leave the Jehovah's Witnesses seems to have been related to the circumstances of disfellowshipping of LaToya and he seemed to have rejected the instruction from the church elders to stop relating to his sister–Jehovah's Witnesses are instructed by the organization to have no relationship with any Witness who had been disfellowshipped by the leadership. According to LaToya:

One day I walked into Janet's room to find Michael crying his eyes out. 'LaToya, … I can't talk to you ever again. … The elders had a big meeting, and they told me never to speak to you because you haven't been coming to the Kingdom Hall. … they said that if I don't stop talking to you, they'll kick me out of the religion.' … Michael decided to disobey the elders' edict and after that never attended any more meetings. … he subsequently severed his ties to the organization through a formal letter. What made this painful episode even more agonizing was that for a long time I believed Michael might be one of the Remnant, the select 144,000.

After Michael dissociated himself from the group, the Watchtower Headquarters of the organization sent a letter to the Body of Elders and Circuit Overseers of the organization which included instructions not to comment to the media on the the matter of dissociation of Michael Jackson from the organization:

In the even that representatives of the new media approach your convention news service department and inquire about Michael Jackson and his position, it would be best for the brother in charge not to comment. They should simply say that they have heard or know about the news report and have no further comment

Michael's children, after his tragic death on June 25, 2009, are now in the custody of their grandmother Katherine. They are reported to have begun attending Kingdom Hall meetings after their father's death.
